지적인 활동 혹은 에소테릭한 지식을 열정적으로 추구하며 사회적인 활동, 예를 들어 스포츠 활동 따위, 에 끼지 않는 사람을 (경멸적인 의미를 내포하여) 지칭하는 용어이다. 따라서 너드는 종종 몸을 쓰는 활동에서 제외되며 동료들에게 혼자서만 움직이는 녀석으로 치부된다.
